On Tuesday, the president of Ukraine, Petro Poroshenko, made a phone call to Russian president Vladimir Putin in order to discuss the situation in eastern Ukraine. During the call, Poroshenko informed Putin of his plan to send in troops to secure the release of 13 hostages who were being held by pro-Russian separatists.
The hostages had been taken hostage on Sunday night, and over the next few days various negotiations took place between the two leaders in order to secure their release. Finally, on Tuesday evening, troops from Ukraine’s national guard secured the hostages’ freedom.
What happened
On January 22nd, 2018, two hostages were taken by terrorists in the city of Slovyansk, in the Donetsk region of Ukraine. On January 24th, the president of Ukraine, Petro Poroshenko, made a call for help to Vladimir Putin.
Putin quickly agreed to help, and on January 26th the Russian military began a military operation to rescue the hostages. Within hours they had freed all of them and returned them safely to their families.
This dramatic event was largely due to the quick response of the president of Ukraine and the Russian military. It is an example of how effective cooperation between countries can be in resolving crises.
How President Petro Poroshenko was able to get the hostages released
One of the most dramatic hostage situations in recent history occurred in Ukraine in 2014. A group of hostages, including several journalists, were taken by pro-Russian rebels. President Petro Poroshenko was able to get the hostages released thanks to the intervention of the president of Ukraine.
President Poroshenko first contacted Russian President Vladimir Putin to try and negotiate their release. Putin was not interested in helping, but he did offer to help Poroshenko track down the rebels who had taken the hostages. After much effort, Poroshenko was able to track down the rebels and launch an assault on their stronghold. The rebels were unable to resist and the hostages were freed.
